Edit a PDF online, free

PDF Vision opens your PDF directly in the browser so you can add text, highlights, shapes, freehand drawing and comments. The file is read from your own device and rewritten there, so a contract, a payslip or an ID is not uploaded to be edited. Editing needs no account; saving, downloading, printing or sharing your copy asks you to create a free one. Nothing to install, and it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPad.

How to edit a PDF

Why use it

Your file stays put

Editing happens in your browser, using your own machine’s memory — the PDF is not uploaded to be modified, which matters for a contract, a medical form or an ID. The one exception is yours to make: on a scanned document the editor offers text recognition, and accepting it sends the file to our servers for that step.

Nothing to install

No desktop application, no browser extension, no trial download. It works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPad, including on a locked-down work laptop.

Edits become part of the file

Text, shapes and annotations are written into the PDF itself, so the person who opens it sees your changes in any reader rather than a layer that only PDF Vision understands.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF editor free?
Editing is free and unlimited, and needs no account: open your document and work on it as long as you like. Keeping the result is what asks for one — saving, downloading, printing or sharing sends you to create a free account. The point is that you can judge the editor on your real document before signing up.
Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?
Not to edit it: the file is opened and rewritten inside your browser. There is one exception, and you trigger it. If the document you open is a scan, the editor offers to run text recognition on it; accepting sends the file to our servers for that step and returns a PDF whose text is selectable. Decline and nothing leaves your device. Merge, Split, Rotate and Watermark stay fully local.
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF?
You can add new text anywhere on the page and cover or annotate what is already there. Rewriting the original text of an arbitrary PDF is limited by how the file was produced; for heavy rewriting, convert to Word, edit, and convert back.
Can I fill in a PDF form?
Yes. Existing form fields are editable, and you can place your own text boxes on a flat form that has no fields at all — the common case with a scanned or printed application.
Will my edits show up in other PDF readers?
Yes. Everything you add is written into the PDF itself, so Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and phone readers all display it. There is no PDF Vision-specific format to install.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The editor supports touch, so you can drag and resize fields and annotations with a finger. Larger documents are more comfortable on a tablet than on a phone.
