Unlock a PDF online, free

Unlock PDF removes the encryption from a password-protected PDF you are entitled to open: supply the password you already use, and PDF Vision returns a copy that opens with no prompt. The owner restrictions that block printing, copying and editing go with it, so the file works normally in Acrobat, Preview and any pipeline that chokes on encrypted documents. Pages, fonts and form fields are untouched. One document a day is free with no account at all, and the tool is only for documents you own or are authorised to modify.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Upload the locked PDF

    Drop in the encrypted PDF you own or are authorised to modify — no account needed. It is sent to our servers, because a browser cannot decrypt a PDF on its own.

  2. Enter the document password

    Type the password you already use to open the file; PDF Vision needs it to decrypt and cannot guess it.

  3. Download the open copy

    Run the unlock, then download a PDF that opens without a prompt and allows printing, copying and editing again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF if I don't know the password?
No. You have to supply the password that opens the file. PDF Vision does not crack, guess or brute-force protection, so a genuinely forgotten password cannot be recovered here.
Is it legal to remove a PDF password?
Only on documents you own or are authorised to modify — your own bank statements, contracts issued to you, files you created. Stripping protection from someone else's confidential document is not what this tool is for.
My PDF opens without a password but won't let me print. What then?
Those are owner restrictions rather than an open password, and they come off without any password at all — use the Remove Restrictions tool at /remove-restrictions. The unlock page is for files that ask for a password before they display.
Does unlocking change how the document looks?
No. Only the encryption and permission flags are removed; pages, fonts, images, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were, and the page count is unchanged.
Is Unlock PDF free?
Yes, and the first document each day needs no account at all: enter the password, download the unlocked copy, and leave with it. That daily allowance is shared across every free PDF Vision tool. A free account lifts it and raises the size ceiling from 15 MB to 100 MB.
Will the unlocked file still open everywhere?
Yes. The output is an ordinary PDF with no encryption left in it, so Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, mobile readers and automated pipelines open it directly, with no prompt.
